Description
SNT-TC-1A – Personnel Qualification and Certification in Nondestructive Testing
ASNT Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A (2024 Edition) provides essential guidelines for employers to develop and implement in-house certification programs for qualifying and certifying NDT personnel. It outlines recommended education, experience, and training requirements for various NDT methods, including ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), magnetic particle testing (MT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), and more.
Since its introduction in 1966, this industry-standard document has served as the foundational framework for employer-based NDT certification programs worldwide, supporting sectors like manufacturing, aerospace, oil & gas, and infrastructure to ensure inspection reliability and safety.
Key updates in the 2024 edition include:
- Clarified definitions for improved precision and understanding;
- New restrictions on using eye drops to artificially enhance vision during acuity tests;
- Recommendations for employers to evaluate if referenced examinations align with their specific needs;
- Addition of the ASNT 9712 Program (aligned with ISO 9712 for enhanced international recognition and third-party certification options);
- Guidance that personnel administering written examinations should receive appropriate training.
It is strongly recommended to use SNT-TC-1A (2024) alongside ANSI/ASNT CP-105 (2024), which provides standardized topical outlines for NDT personnel qualification training.
This edition has been updated via the addendum process, with the addendum released and effective in May 2025. Additionally, Appendix C outlines upcoming changes planned for the 2028 edition, helping organizations prepare in advance.
